CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Noelle truly didn’t want to be one of those girls who thought being with a guy made everything better, but she was having a really difficult time preventing herself from turning into one when she woke up the next morning feeling far better than she had the day before. Her cold had been mild, sure, but she hadn’t expected to wake up to a comfortable throat and a mostly clear nose. She most certainly expected to wake up next to the one guy who had been on her mind for the past few weeks, who had fallen asleep right next to her with his arms around her waist and face in the crook of her neck.

But she didn’t.

When Noelle turned over, ready to feel Carson’s body next to hers, she was met with nothing but disappointment and the imprint of where he slept. Her sleepy eyes narrowed in tired confusion, brows furrowing as she slowly propped herself up. She noticed Carson’s things from the bedside table were gone and Aiden’s pajamas were folded at the end of the bed; nothing was left but crumpled sheets where he was and his lingering pine scent clinging to them.

He was gone, and Noelle felt a dull thud of disappointment land on her heart as she pressed her lips together. She wondered why he left; she wondered if he regretted showing up last night as she let out a sigh and reached for her phone. It wasn’t until she looked at the message on her screen that her disappointment, hurt, and hint of anger completely dissipated.

I’m sorry I left before you woke up. Had to get to work but I’ll see you later, yeah? Hope you’re feeling better, babe.

It was ridiculous how Noelle had to contain the squeal threatening to escape her, like she was some kind of lovesick teenager, even if she couldn’t help but feel like that at this moment. Carson had sent her the message about an hour ago, and her previous disheartened emotions were replaced by a cheek-aching grin and an erratic heartbeat. Fucking crazy how Carson could induce these reactions out of her by just a damn text.

“Wow, bitch,” she whispered to herself through her smile, getting off her bed to get ready for the day. It wasn’t until she started washing her face in the bathroom when she noticed the discoloration on her neck. All the air rushed out of her lungs when her mind was slammed with last night’s memories. How in the world did she forget Carson’s lips and teeth kissing, sucking and biting her skin? She desperately hoped that the first time she felt that kind of sensation wouldn’t also be her last.

And then, she vaguely remembered Carson making her a promise before she had drifted off to sleep—a promise that turned her legs to jelly and her stomach to lurch in anticipated pleasure. He promised he would finish whatever the hell he was starting last night; he basically promised to take the mere act of leaving hickeys a few steps further, and they both knew what that meant.
